🐕 Real-Life Practical Skills
📍 In-Home Training
You don’t need a perfect dog.
You need:
walks that aren’t stressful
guests that can enter your house
fewer daily battles
calmer routines
a dog you can actually enjoy living with
Most behavior problems are not caused by “bad dogs.”
They come from unclear communication, overstimulation, inconsistent routines, and environments that are simply a lot for dogs.
Training should make life easier for both of you.

Benefits of In-Home Training
Most dogs behavior differently in:
their own territory
apartments
row homes
sidewalks
elevators
front doors
busy family routines
That’s the benefit of training where the behavior is actually happening.
Real life. Real distractions. Real routines.

FAQs
-
Yes. Positive reinforcement is a major part of my training approach, and I prioritize clear communication, practical skill building, and humane handling.
I follow a LIMA-based approach (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), which means training plans are tailored to the individual dog, household, and goals involved.
Many dogs do very well with rewards-based training alone. In some cases, additional tools may be appropriate depending on safety, handling ability, behavioral concerns, and quality of life considerations. For example, helping an elderly owner safely walk a large, powerful dog may require a different approach than training a young puppy.
My goal is never to use more intervention than necessary. The focus is always on creating clearer communication, safer handling, and a calmer life for both dogs and their people.

Yes. Training takes place in your home and neighborhood so we can work on behavior where it actually happens. I currently serve Bethesda, Kensington, and Chevy Chase. Depending on my schedule, I may be able to see you if you are within 15 min or so of those areas. Please email info@savvycitydog.com if you’re unsure if you are in my service area.

Training can start anytime after your puppies first 3 days in the home. Many clients like to actually schedule a puppy-prep session before the puppy even arrives, that’s great too!
The first few months are when puppies are learning habits, routines, confidence, and expectations about the world around them.
Early guidance can prevent many common behavior problems from becoming much harder later.
-
Coaching sessions are collaborative sessions where I teach you how to work with your dog directly.
Day training includes hands-on training visits where I work with your dog between coaching sessions to help build consistency and faster progress.
-
That depends on the dog, the household, the consistency of practice, and the goals involved.
Some dogs improve quickly with a few focused changes. More complex behavior concerns often require longer-term support and consistency over time.
