City Pups: 10 Best Dog Breeds for Urban Living 2023 Update!

Are you living in a city and looking to add a furry companion to your life? You're not alone! More and more people are discovering the joys of owning a dog, especially in the city.

But with so many breeds to choose from, it can be overwhelming to find the right one.

I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 city dogs for 2023 based on my first-hand experience working with thousands of dog owners in the Washington, DC area for the past 17 years. These breeds were carefully chosen for their friendly nature, quiet demeanor, and ideal size for apartment living. Plus, many of them are hypoallergenic, making them perfect for allergy sufferers or those who like to keep their living space neat and tidy.

Read on to find your perfect match! Dog breeds are listed smallest to largest.

  • Italian Greyhound - These sleek pups are great for snuggling and love to keep their owners warm. They're small but mighty, and their sweet personalities make them a great addition to any family.

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - These adorable pups are known for their affectionate and gentle nature. They're always up for a cuddle and love to be around their owners.

  • Cavapoo - A mix of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle, these pups are friendly, playful, and oh-so-adorable. They're also hypoallergenic, which means they're perfect for those with allergies.

  • French Bulldog - These little clowns are always up for a good time and love to make their owners laugh. They're also incredibly loyal and make great companions.

  • Boston Terrier - With their tuxedo markings and big eyes, these pups are as cute as they come. They're also full of energy and love to play.

  • Bichon Frise - These fluffy little pups are known for their playful and affectionate nature. They tend to have a bit more confidence than similar-sized poodles, making them less barky and more go with the flow - perfect for city life! They're also hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for those with allergies.

  • Goldendoodle - A mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle, these pups are smart, friendly, and full of energy. They're also hypoallergenic, which means they're perfect for those with allergies.

  • Australian Shepherd - These intelligent pups are great for those who love to stay active. They're always up for a game of fetch or a hike in the mountains. This is the most vocal breed on the list, so be aware if you live in an apartment, but I had to include them for their friendly nature, high intelligence, and athletic ability.

  • Labrador Retriever - Friendly, energetic, and great with kids, these pups are a classic choice for families. They do shed quite a bit and some drool, but their sweet personalities more than make up for it.

  • Bernese Mountain Dog - Calm and gentle, these pups are great for families and apartment living. They do shed and some drool a lot, but they come with big hearts and lots of love. They are also fairly low energy, especially in our DC summers, which makes them perfect for families looking for a lovable couch potato!

Please note that this list of recommended dog breeds is just a general guide. It's important to keep in mind that every individual dog has their own unique personality, and a dog's behavior is influenced by factors such as genetics, early life experiences, and environment. While these breeds are known for their friendly and easy-going nature, there is no way to guarantee that any dog will never bite or bark. There is also no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog, though some of these breeds will come close. It's essential to do your own research and meet the specific dog you're considering to ensure they're a good match for you and your lifestyle.
